There are running routes and then there are epic trails and
Comfortably Numb in Whistler is certainly the latter.
Serving up 25 kms of rugged single track to runners who are
looking to push their 1/2 marathon distance to a whole new level,
this is a race well established since 2004, in a town of outdoor
enthusiasts. If there was ever a match made in heaven it was
bringing this recognized trail race in to the 5 Peaks Running
Series family....even if it was last minute. Considering the trail
is a key portion of the upcoming Meet Your Maker 50 miler on
September 2, 2012, this will be viewed as an ideal training
ground in future. Although the weather forecaster warned of muddy
wet expectations, the skies over Whistler on June 24th prevailed
and even shone some rays on the 93 eager participants. Considering
the length, most had pre registered, but there were a few last
minute crazies to show up at the Spruce Grove headquarters to jump
on the band wagon. Even two Tough Mudder participants from the day
prior decided to make a doubleheader out of epic Whistler racing.
Another family from Denver, Colorado explained that they take turns
selecting an annual destination race to challenge together and this
was the 2012 selection - what a way to travel!
Regardless of a few greasy spots along the trail, Vancouver's Ed
McCarthy ate up the course in 1:54:57, with Whistler-based Seamus
Frew closely behind at a time of 2:01. Abigail May of Salmon Arm
locked in a time of 2:30, with Darbykai Standrick's 2:32:53
not far off.
5 Peaks would like to thank sponsors the RMOW, RedBull, and The
Adventure Group for helping to turn out this legacy laced race to
the followers and new diehards alike.
